Drug intelligence / Profile preview
IPOD-O is an oral fixed-dose combination antibiotic tablet containing cefpodoxime proxetil, a third-generation cephalosporin, and ofloxacin, a second-generation fluoroquinolone. Developed and marketed by Thrift Pharmaceuticals, this combination is approved for the treatment of various bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and other systemic bacterial infections. Cefpodoxime proxetil acts as a prodrug that is hydrolyzed to active cefpodoxime, which inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). Ofloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA replication by targeting DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. Together, these two agents provide synergistic broad-spectrum bactericidal activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens.
