Overview

Ceftazidime + amikacin + metronidazole is a combination of three antibiotics used primarily for the treatment of severe or complicated bacterial infections, especially intra-abdominal infections. Ceftazidime is a third-generation cephalosporin beta-lactam antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins, leading to cell lysis and death[3]. Amikacin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that binds irreversibly to the 30S subunit of prokaryotic ribosomes, inhibiting protein synthesis and causing misreading of mRNA[6]. Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole antimicrobial agent effective against anaerobic bacteria and certain protozoa; it disrupts DNA synthesis in susceptible organisms. This combination provides broad-spectrum coverage against Gram-negative aerobes (ceftazidime, amikacin) and anaerobes (metronidazole), making it suitable for polymicrobial infections such as complicated intra-abdominal infections[8]. The drugs are typically administered intravenously in hospital settings.
