ceftazidime + avibactam

Ceftazidime + avibactam is a fixed-dose combination antibiotic consisting of two components: ceftazidime, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic, and avibactam, a non-β-lactam β-lactamase inhibitor. Ceftazidime exerts its bactericidal effect by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), primarily PBP3 in Gram-negative bacteria, thereby inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. Avibactam protects ceftazidime from degradation by inactivating certain β-lactamases through covalent but reversible acylation of the enzyme's active-site serine residue. This combination extends the spectrum of activity against multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria, including those producing extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) and some carbapenemases. It is indicated for the treatment of complicated intra-abdominal infections (with metronidazole), complicated urinary tract infections including pyelonephritis, hospital-acquired bacterial pneumonia (HABP), and ventilator-associated bacterial pneumonia (VABP).
