ceftazidime + tazobactam

Ceftazidime + tazobactam is a fixed-dose combination antibiotic consisting of ceftazidime, a third-generation cephalosporin, and tazobactam, a penicillanic acid sulfone beta-lactamase inhibitor. Ceftazidime exerts its bactericidal activity by binding to and inhibiting penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), particularly PBP3, which are essential for bacterial cell wall synthesis. Tazobactam acts as a suicide inhibitor of many plasmid- and chromosome-mediated beta-lactamases, thereby protecting ceftazidime from hydrolysis and extending its spectrum of activity against beta-lactamase-producing organisms. Developed and marketed by Biotics Lab under the brand name Cefmax, this combination is indicated for the treatment of severe bacterial infections in critical care settings, including hospital-acquired pneumonia and complicated intra-abdominal infections caused by susceptible Gram-negative organisms.
