Overview

ceftazidime-avibactam + vancomycin is a combination antibiotic regimen used to treat severe bacterial infections, particularly those suspected to involve multi-drug resistant (MDR) organisms. Ceftazidime is a third-generation cephalosporin that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). Avibactam is a non-beta-lactam beta-lactamase inhibitor that protects ceftazidime from degradation by Class A, Class C, and some Class D beta-lactamases, extending its spectrum to include carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Vancomycin is a glycopeptide antibiotic that inhibits cell wall synthesis by binding to the D-alanyl-D-alanine terminus of cell wall precursors, providing potent activity against Gram-positive bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). This combination is typically administered intravenously in hospital settings for indications such as hospital-acquired pneumonia and complicated intra-abdominal infections.
