Overview

ceftriaxone + cefixime refers to a sequential antibiotic regimen investigated by the University Hospital, Clermont-Ferrand, for the treatment of acute uncomplicated pyelonephritis. The regimen involves an initial intravenous administration of ceftriaxone, a third-generation cephalosporin, followed by a six-day course of oral cefixime, also a third-generation cephalosporin. Both agents function by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which inhibits the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis in bacterial cell walls, leading to cell lysis. This specific short-term (7-day) protocol was designed to provide a simplified outpatient-friendly alternative to traditional 10-14 day treatments, potentially reducing the reliance on fluoroquinolones and lowering healthcare costs.
