Overview

Cefuroxime + bismuth is a combination of two active pharmaceutical ingredients used primarily in the eradication therapy for Helicobacter pylori infection, especially in patients with penicillin allergy. Cefuroxime is a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins, leading to cell lysis and death. Bismuth compounds (such as bismuth subcitrate or subnitrate) act as gastroprotective agents with mild antimicrobial activity against H. pylori and provide mucosal protection by forming a protective barrier on ulcer sites. This combination is often part of quadruple therapy regimens for H. pylori eradication, sometimes alongside other antibiotics and proton pump inhibitors[1][2][4]. The regimen offers an alternative to amoxicillin-containing therapies for patients who cannot tolerate penicillins.
