cefuroxime + clavulanic acid

Cefuroxime + clavulanic acid is an oral fixed-dose combination antibiotic consisting of cefuroxime axetil, a second-generation cephalosporin, and clavulanic acid, a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Cefuroxime axetil is a prodrug that is hydrolyzed to cefuroxime, which exerts its bactericidal activity by binding to and inhibiting penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). This inhibition disrupts the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis in bacterial cell walls, leading to cell lysis. Clavulanic acid is a suicide inhibitor of various beta-lactamases (including Richmond-Sykes types II, III, IV, and V), which are enzymes produced by bacteria to confer resistance by hydrolyzing the beta-lactam ring of antibiotics. By binding irreversibly to these enzymes, clavulanic acid protects cefuroxime from degradation and restores its activity against beta-lactamase-producing organisms. This combination is indicated for the treatment of various infections, including those of the respiratory tract, urinary tract, and skin.
