Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Cefuroxime + dextrose is a sterile, nonpyrogenic, single-use injectable combination drug product consisting of the second-generation cephalosporin antibacterial agent cefuroxime sodium and dextrose injection as a diluent. Developed and manufactured by B. Braun Medical Inc., this formulation is typically provided in the DUPLEX® dual-chamber container, which allows for the storage of the drug and diluent separately until administration. Cefuroxime exerts its bactericidal activity by binding to and inhibiting penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which are essential for bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell wall disruption and death. The dextrose component is included to achieve iso-osmolality for intravenous use. It is indicated for the treatment of various infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including lower respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin infections, septicemia, meningitis, and bone and joint infections, as well as for perioperative prophylaxis.
