Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Claviator-CV is a fixed-dose combination oral antibiotic containing cefuroxime axetil, a second-generation cephalosporin prodrug, and potassium clavulanate, a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Developed by Al-Madina Pharmaceuticals, it is approved for the treatment of various bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections (such as pharyngitis, tonsillitis, sinusitis, and bronchitis), urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and otitis media. Cefuroxime axetil is hydrolyzed in vivo to active cefuroxime, which binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) to inhibit bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell lysis. Potassium clavulanate acts as a suicide inhibitor of bacterial beta-lactamase enzymes, preventing the enzymatic degradation of cefuroxime and restoring its activity against beta-lactamase-producing resistant bacterial strains.
