Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Secoclav is an oral fixed-dose combination antibiotic containing cefuroxime axetil, a second-generation cephalosporin prodrug, and clavulanic acid, a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Cefuroxime axetil is hydrolyzed post-absorption to release active cefuroxime, which exerts bactericidal activity by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) and inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. Clavulanic acid, a suicide inhibitor of beta-lactamases, binds irreversibly to these enzymes, preventing the degradation of cefuroxime and extending its spectrum of activity against beta-lactamase-producing, resistant bacterial strains. Developed by General Pharmaceuticals, Secoclav is approved for the treatment of various mild-to-moderate bacterial infections, including pharyngitis, tonsillitis, acute otitis media, acute bacterial maxillary sinusitis, respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, and skin and soft tissue infections.
