Overview

The combination of a cell-culture trivalent influenza vaccine (cTIV) and a 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23) refers to the co-administration of two distinct vaccines to provide simultaneous protection against seasonal influenza and pneumococcal disease. The cTIV component, such as Flucelvax, is manufactured using mammalian cell culture technology (typically MDCK cells) rather than traditional egg-based methods, which reduces the risk of egg-adaptive mutations that can decrease vaccine effectiveness. It contains hemagglutinin from three influenza strains: two Influenza A subtypes (H1N1 and H3N2) and one Influenza B lineage. The PPSV23 component, such as Pneumovax 23, contains purified capsular polysaccharides from 23 serotypes of *Streptococcus pneumoniae*, which are responsible for the majority of invasive pneumococcal infections. This co-administration strategy is primarily utilized in elderly populations (65 years and older) and high-risk individuals to improve vaccination coverage and provide broad immunity against respiratory pathogens during the winter season.
