Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Cell-in-a-Box + ifosfamide is a combination cell and prodrug therapy developed by Austrianova for the treatment of advanced, inoperable pancreatic cancer. The therapy utilizes the proprietary Cell-in-a-Box technology to micro-encapsulate living mammalian cells that have been genetically engineered to over-express the CYP2B1 isoform of human cytochrome P450. These capsules are implanted via a catheter into the blood vessels leading to the pancreatic tumor. When the prodrug ifosfamide is administered systemically (intravenously) at low doses, the encapsulated cells locally convert it into its active, cancer-killing metabolites. This localized activation allows for high concentrations of the cytotoxic agent at the tumor site while minimizing systemic side effects typically associated with high-dose chemotherapy.
