Overview

Centruroides (scorpion) Immune F(ab')₂ Antivenin is a purified preparation of venom-specific immunoglobulin G F(ab')₂ fragments derived from the plasma of horses immunized with venom from several Centruroides species. It is administered intravenously for the treatment of clinical signs of envenomation following a sting by Centruroides genus scorpions. The drug works by passively introducing antibodies that bind to and neutralize circulating neurotoxins in the venom, thereby preventing them from interacting with their physiological targets and limiting systemic toxicity. This reduces or reverses symptoms such as loss of muscle control, abnormal eye movements, respiratory distress, excessive salivation, and vomiting. The product was developed in Mexico using pooled venoms from multiple Centruroides species and was approved by the FDA in 2011 under the brand name Anascorp[1][5][6][8].
