Overview
Cephalexin + clavulanic acid is an oral fixed-dose combination (FDC) antibiotic consisting of the first-generation cephalosporin cephalexin and the beta-lactamase inhibitor clavulanic acid (often as potassium clavulanate). Developed by Sun Pharma and approved in India, this combination is designed to overcome beta-lactamase-mediated resistance, thereby extending the antibacterial spectrum of cephalexin against resistant strains. Cephalexin works by binding to and inactivating penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which disrupts bacterial cell wall synthesis and leads to cell lysis. Clavulanic acid acts as a suicide inhibitor of bacterial beta-lactamases, protecting cephalexin from enzymatic degradation. This synergistic combination is primarily indicated for the treatment of various bacterial infections, including upper respiratory tract infections, uncomplicated skin and soft tissue infections, urinary tract infections, and dental infections.
