This combination antibiotic regimen consists of a third-generation cephalosporin and metronidazole. The regimen provides broad-spectrum coverage: the third-generation cephalosporin targets Gram-negative aerobic bacteria by inhibiting cell wall synthesis, while metronidazole provides anaerobic coverage by disrupting bacterial DNA. In the clinical trial context, the therapy was administered intravenously until oral intake was tolerated, followed by a transition to oral administration for a total duration of approximately 10 days.
