Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ceramide + virgin coconut oil + cholesterol is a topical combination therapy designed to restore the skin's physiologic barrier, particularly in patients with atopic dermatitis or compromised skin integrity. This formulation typically utilizes a 3:1:1 molar ratio of ceramides, cholesterol, and free fatty acids (supplied by the virgin coconut oil) to mimic the natural lipid lamellae of the stratum corneum. By replenishing these essential lipids, the drug reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and enhances the skin's protective function. Furthermore, the virgin coconut oil component contains high levels of lauric acid, which provides significant antimicrobial activity against pathogens such as *Staphylococcus aureus*, a common complicating factor in eczema. The combination is frequently used as a non-steroidal, barrier-repair medical device or therapeutic moisturizer.
