Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Cerium nitrate + silver sulfadiazine is a topical antimicrobial cream composed of 2.2% cerium nitrate and 1% silver sulfadiazine. It's primarily used for managing severe burns, particularly when immediate surgical excision and grafting must be delayed. The combination produces a hardened, protective eschar that resists bacterial colonization while allowing for postponed or staged surgical intervention. Beyond its antimicrobial properties, cerium nitrate reduces progressive tissue necrosis, decreases leukocyte activation, and mitigates systemic immune dysfunction associated with severe burns.
