Overview

Cetylpyridinium chloride + xylitol is an investigational combination therapy developed by The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston for the management of dental plaque and gingivitis. Formulated as a chewing gum containing 0.09% cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), it utilizes the antimicrobial properties of CPC, a quaternary ammonium compound that disrupts bacterial cell membranes, alongside xylitol, a sugar alcohol known to inhibit the growth and adhesion of cariogenic bacteria like Streptococcus mutans. The formulation was studied in a randomized, double-blind, crossover clinical trial (NCT03219840) to evaluate its ability to reduce plaque indices and gingival inflammation in a university population.
