Hawaii Biotech's chikungunya vaccine is a recombinant subunit vaccine candidate developed in collaboration with Baylor College of Medicine for the prevention of chikungunya virus (CHIKV) infection. The vaccine utilizes Hawaii Biotech's proprietary protein expression platform, which employs stable insect cell lines to produce recombinant CHIKV viral antigens. It is designed to elicit high titers of virus-neutralizing antibodies. In preclinical research supported by a Phase I Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), the vaccine candidate demonstrated the ability to prevent viral replication in immunocompetent mice and provide protection against lethal challenge in immunocompromised animal models.
