Overview
Ixchiq (VLA1553) is a live-attenuated vaccine developed by Valneva for the prevention of disease caused by the chikungunya virus (CHIKV). It is derived from the La Reunion strain (CHIKV LR2006-OPY1) and contains a specific 60-amino-acid deletion in the non-structural protein 3 (nsP3) gene, which significantly reduces viral virulence while preserving its ability to induce a robust and durable immune response. Approved by the FDA in November 2023, it is the first vaccine available for chikungunya. The vaccine is administered as a single intramuscular dose and is designed to provide long-lasting protection by inducing high titers of neutralizing antibodies. Clinical development involved significant partnership with the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire De La Reunion for pivotal trials in endemic regions.
