Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This is a combination therapy consisting of a Chinese herbal medicine formulation (often in the form of a prescription granule or decoction) and the synthetic corticosteroid drug prednisone. The specific herbal component may vary but commonly includes multi-herb formulas such as Qingfei Huaxian Decoction (containing codonopsis pilosula, ophiopogon japonicus, adenophora tetraphylla, tuckahoe, radix astragali, salvia miltiorrhiza, polygonum cuspidatum, rhizoma pinelliae preparatum, polygonatum odoratum, malaytea scurfpea fruit, root of Chinese trichosanthes, rhizoma chuanxiong, radix curcumae longae, peach kernel, scutellaria and liquorice)[1]. Prednisone is an immunosuppressive glucocorticoid that acts via the glucocorticoid receptor to reduce inflammation. The combination is used primarily for its additive or synergistic anti-inflammatory effects in diseases such as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and other inflammatory conditions[1][2]. Herbal components may modulate immune response and potentially alter pharmacokinetics or side effect profiles of corticosteroids[2][5][6].
