Overview

CRYR + TRF is a combination of two dietary supplements: Chinese Red Yeast Rice (CRYR) and a tocotrienol-enriched fraction (TRF) derived from palm oil. It is being investigated by the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia. Chinese Red Yeast Rice contains monacolin K, which is chemically identical to lovastatin and acts as an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor to lower LDL cholesterol. Tocotrienols, members of the vitamin E family, are hypothesized to suppress HMG-CoA reductase gene expression, potentially providing an additive or synergistic effect in lowering serum lipids.
