Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Chitogel + Deferiprone is an investigational combination product consisting of a chitosan-dextran hydrogel (Chitogel) and the iron chelator deferiprone. Developed by the University of Adelaide, it is designed as a composite immunomodulatory barrier agent for use during spinal surgery. The hydrogel component provides hemostatic and anti-adhesion properties, while deferiprone acts as a hydroxypyridinone-derived iron chelator to modulate the inflammatory and fibrotic response. The gel is applied intraoperatively to the dura and nerve roots during decompressive lumbar laminectomy for lumbar radiculopathy, with the primary goal of preventing peridural adhesion formation and reducing the incidence of Failed Back Surgery Syndrome (FBSS).
