Overview

Chitosan + collagen refers to a combination of two natural biopolymers—chitosan (a deacetylated derivative of chitin, typically sourced from crustaceans) and collagen (the main structural protein in animal connective tissue)—formulated together as biomaterials. This combination is widely used in the form of hydrogels, sponges, or dressings for biomedical applications. The mechanism of action is primarily physical and biological support for tissue regeneration and wound healing. Chitosan provides antibacterial properties, promotes fibroblast proliferation, increases collagen deposition, and stimulates hyaluronic acid synthesis; it also binds red blood cells to aid hemostasis. Collagen supports cell adhesion and growth by providing a scaffold that mimics the extracellular matrix. Together, they create biocompatible materials with enhanced mechanical strength and bioactivity compared to either component alone. These composite materials are used mainly for wound healing (including chronic wounds such as diabetic ulcers), bone/cartilage/skin regeneration scaffolds, drug delivery systems (enabling controlled release), and potentially neuroprotective applications due to their ability to cross biological barriers[1][2][3][4].
