Chitosan + Salvia miltiorrhiza is an investigational drug combination being studied for the treatment of fallopian tube obstructive infertility. It is administered as an injection following a fallopian tube recanalization procedure to prevent postoperative re-occlusion. Chitosan, a polysaccharide derived from marine crustaceans, is believed to act as a physical barrier to prevent adhesions, promote the growth of epithelial cells while inhibiting fibroblasts, and has hemostatic properties. Salvia miltiorrhiza, a traditional Chinese medicine also known as Danshen, has anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic properties and is thought to improve microcirculation, which may help resolve fibrosis and inflammation contributing to the blockage. Clinical studies have shown that the combination injection can significantly improve long-term tubal patency and increase intrauterine pregnancy rates compared to either agent alone or no treatment.
