Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Chitosan-iron(III) complex is a chitin-derived polymer complex consisting of chitosan and ferric iron (Fe3+). It is primarily investigated as a non-calcium-based phosphate chelator for the treatment of hyperphosphatemia in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The complex works by binding to dietary phosphorus in the gastrointestinal tract, forming an insoluble complex that is excreted in the feces, thereby reducing serum phosphorus levels and preventing vascular calcification. Additionally, it is being explored as a third-generation polysaccharide iron complex for the treatment of iron deficiency anemia.
