Chlorazolamide-Cu(II) complex is a metal coordination complex consisting of the sulfonamide 5-(2-chlorophenyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazole-2-sulfonamide (chlorazolamide) and copper(II) ions. It functions as a potent inhibitor of carbonic anhydrase (CA) isozymes, specifically CA I, II, and IV. While the parent sulfonamide shows limited topical efficacy in lowering intraocular pressure (IOP) due to poor penetration, the Cu(II) complex demonstrates significant IOP-lowering activity in animal models. This effect is attributed to the inhibition of CA II in ocular tissues, which reduces aqueous humor secretion. The complex is primarily researched for its potential application in treating glaucoma and ocular hypertension.
