Drug intelligence / Profile preview
XAVI-M is an oral fixed-dose combination tablet containing the antispasmodic mebeverine and the benzodiazepine anxiolytic chlordiazepoxide. It is primarily indicated for the symptomatic treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other functional gastrointestinal disorders, particularly where emotional stress, anxiety, and physical cramping coexist. Mebeverine acts directly as a musculotropic agent on the smooth muscle of the gastrointestinal tract, blocking voltage-gated sodium channels and inhibiting intracellular calcium accumulation to relieve spasms without affecting normal gut motility. Chlordiazepoxide acts as an allosteric modulator of the GABA-A receptor complex in the central nervous system, enhancing GABA-mediated inhibitory neurotransmission to alleviate anxiety and stress-induced gut symptoms. Together, this combination targets the gut-brain axis to provide comprehensive relief from abdominal pain, cramping, bloating, and irregular bowel movements.
