Overview

**Chlorhexidine + cetylpyridinium chloride** is a combination of two cationic antiseptics commonly formulated in oral rinses and mouthwashes for reducing oral biofilm, gingivitis, periodontitis, halitosis, and peri-implant infections. Chlorhexidine is a bisbiguanide antiseptic with a broad-spectrum bactericidal action, disrupting bacterial cell membranes and causing leakage of cellular contents. Cetylpyridinium chloride is a quaternary ammonium compound that also disrupts microbial membranes and inhibits plaque formation. Combined, they show a synergistic antimicrobial effect against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, and reduce the risk of adverse effects seen with higher concentrations of chlorhexidine. This combination also exhibits antiviral and antifungal properties, including inactivation activity against enveloped viruses such as influenza and coronaviruses. Main indication is adjunctive treatment in periodontal and peri-implant disease, and oral hygiene maintenance, including prophylaxis in dental procedures and management of oral biofilm[1][2][3][5][7][9].
