Overview

This experimental antimicrobial gel formulation, developed by researchers at the University of Santiago de Compostela, combines 0.20% chlorhexidine (CHX) with cymenol (o-cymen-5-ol). Chlorhexidine is a well-established cationic bisbiguanide antiseptic that disrupts bacterial cell membranes, while cymenol is a small molecule antimicrobial agent that provides complementary activity against oral biofilms. The formulation is specifically designed to target dental plaque and salivary flora. In a randomized crossover clinical trial involving healthy volunteers, a single application of the gel demonstrated potent immediate antimicrobial effects and substantivity (persistence of action) for up to seven hours, performing similarly to standard 0.20% chlorhexidine-only gels. It is currently being investigated for its efficacy in maintaining oral hygiene and preventing biofilm-related dental conditions.
