Chlorhexidine + fluoride is a combination pharmaceutical intervention used for the prevention and management of dental caries. This specific combination was utilized as an active comparator in a randomized controlled trial conducted by Cairo University to evaluate the efficacy of grape seed extract mouthwash in high-caries-risk young Egyptian adults. The formulation combines chlorhexidine, a potent broad-spectrum antiseptic bisbiguanide, with fluoride, a mineralizing agent. Chlorhexidine acts by disrupting bacterial cell membranes, effectively reducing the population of cariogenic bacteria such as *Streptococcus mutans*. Fluoride works synergistically by promoting the remineralization of tooth enamel and incorporating into the hydroxyapatite crystal lattice to form fluorapatite, which is significantly more resistant to acid-induced demineralization. Together, these agents provide a dual-action approach of reducing microbial challenge and increasing host resistance to decay.
