Drug intelligence / Profile preview
chlorhexidine + lidocaine (marketed under the brand name Collunosol) is a combination topical throat spray used for the symptomatic treatment of acute pharyngitis and tonsillitis. It combines the antiseptic properties of chlorhexidine with the local anesthetic effects of lidocaine. Chlorhexidine is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent that disrupts microbial cell membranes, leading to the leakage of intracellular contents and cell death. Lidocaine provides rapid pain relief by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels in nerve fibers, which inhibits the initiation and conduction of pain impulses. In clinical research, this formulation has been used as a standard-of-care comparator to evaluate the efficacy of herbal treatments for sore throat, such as those developed by A. Vogel AG.
