Overview

Naseptin is a topical nasal cream containing a combination of the antiseptic chlorhexidine dihydrochloride and the aminoglycoside antibiotic neomycin sulfate. It is primarily indicated for the eradication of *Staphylococcus aureus* from the nasal mucosa and for the prevention of nasal infections, particularly in patients or healthcare workers who are carriers of the bacteria. Chlorhexidine acts as a broad-spectrum antiseptic by disrupting bacterial cell membranes, leading to the leakage of cytoplasmic contents. Neomycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, causing misreading of mRNA and the production of nonfunctional proteins. This dual-action approach helps reduce the reservoir of staphylococci in the nose, which is a common source of infection in surgical settings or for recurrent skin infections.
