Overview

This is a combination drug composed of chlorhexidine, tetracycline, and zinc oxide. Chlorhexidine is a broad-spectrum antiseptic with bactericidal and bacteriostatic properties, commonly used in dentistry for its ability to disrupt bacterial cell membranes and precipitate cell contents[1][10]. Tetracycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit of bacteria, making it effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms[9]. Zinc oxide serves as an inert base with mild antimicrobial properties and is widely used in dental materials for its soothing effect on tissues. This combination may be formulated as an intracanal medicament or local delivery system for endodontic or periodontal therapy. The rationale behind combining these agents is to provide synergistic antimicrobial action (chlorhexidine plus tetracycline) while utilizing zinc oxide as a carrier or filler to enhance handling characteristics and radiopacity. Such combinations are investigated primarily for use in root canal disinfection, management of necrotic primary teeth, or adjunctive treatment of periodontitis.
