Experimental mouthrinse formulations developed by the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC) in collaboration with Dentaid for the prevention and treatment of dental plaque. These formulations combine chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX), a potent broad-spectrum biguanide antiseptic, with cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), a quaternary ammonium compound. Chlorhexidine works by binding to the negatively charged bacterial cell wall, causing membrane disruption and leakage of intracellular components, thereby inhibiting bacterial colonization and biofilm formation. The research focused on evaluating a lower concentration (0.03%) of CHX in combination with 0.05% CPC to maintain clinical efficacy in plaque inhibition while minimizing common side effects associated with higher concentrations, such as extrinsic tooth staining and taste alteration.
