Overview

Chlorhexidine gluconate + alcohol is an investigational mouthwash formulation containing 0.12% chlorhexidine gluconate and ethanol, specifically studied by researchers at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) for the control of dental plaque (biofilm). Chlorhexidine is a cationic bisbiguanide that acts as a broad-spectrum antiseptic by binding to bacterial cell walls and membranes, causing membrane disruption and leakage of intracellular components. Alcohol in the formulation serves as a solvent and auxiliary antiseptic. In clinical trials (NCT02656251), this formulation was compared against an alcohol-free version and a placebo to evaluate its efficacy in inhibiting supra- and subgingival biofilm formation. While effective, the alcohol-containing version was noted to have lower patient acceptance compared to the alcohol-free alternative due to potential side effects like mucosal irritation.
