chlorhexidine gluconate + metronidazole

Chlorhexidine gluconate + metronidazole is an investigational topical combination antimicrobial gel consisting of 0.5% chlorhexidine gluconate and 1.5% metronidazole. It is being studied by H.P. Government Dental College and Hospital Shimla as an adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP) for the management of plaque-induced gingivitis. Chlorhexidine gluconate acts as a broad-spectrum antiseptic that disrupts microbial cell membranes, while metronidazole is a nitroimidazole antibiotic that targets anaerobic bacteria by inhibiting nucleic acid synthesis. The combination is designed to target the oral bacterial biofilm responsible for gingival inflammation, with clinical evidence suggesting it is more effective than chlorhexidine alone in reducing gingival index and sulcus bleeding scores.
