Overview

**chloroprocaine + morphine** is a sequential epidural co-administration regimen evaluated by Northwestern University in a completed randomized study of women undergoing postpartum tubal ligation. The regimen used epidural 3% chloroprocaine for short-acting surgical anesthesia followed by preservative-free epidural morphine at skin incision for postoperative analgesia; saline was administered as a placebo before chloroprocaine in the SCM study arm. Chloroprocaine is an ester local anesthetic that inhibits neuronal impulse generation and conduction, while morphine is a full opioid agonist with relative selectivity for the mu-opioid receptor.
