chlorthalidone + potassium chloride

A combination of chlorthalidone, a thiazide-like diuretic primarily used to treat hypertension and edema, with potassium chloride, an electrolyte supplement used to prevent or treat low blood potassium (hypokalemia). Chlorthalidone works by inhibiting the sodium-chloride symporter in the distal convoluted tubule of the kidneys, reducing sodium and chloride reabsorption and increasing water excretion. This action decreases fluid volume and peripheral vascular resistance, helping normalize blood pressure. However, this mechanism also leads to increased potassium excretion, which can cause hypokalemia. Potassium chloride supplements are included to prevent or treat this hypokalemia, as potassium is essential for several bodily functions, particularly heart function.
