cholecalciferol + calcium carbonate is a combination therapy consisting of vitamin D3 and an elemental calcium source. In the context of clinical research at Karolinska University Hospital (specifically trial NCT00982722), this combination was investigated for its ability to manage patients with primary hyperparathyroidism following successful parathyroidectomy. Cholecalciferol serves as a precursor to calcitriol, which binds to the Vitamin D receptor (VDR) to enhance intestinal calcium absorption and inhibit the synthesis and secretion of parathyroid hormone (PTH). Calcium carbonate provides additional calcium to support bone remineralization and further suppress PTH through the calcium-sensing receptor. The treatment aims to prevent persistent or recurrent secondary hyperparathyroidism and improve bone mineral density in the postoperative period.
