Cholecalciferol + interferon beta-1a is a combination of two agents with distinct mechanisms and uses. Cholecalciferol, also known as vitamin D3, is a dietary supplement and hormone precursor that helps regulate calcium and phosphate metabolism in the body. Interferon beta-1a is a recombinant protein used primarily as an immunomodulator for the treatment of relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS), including clinically isolated syndrome, relapsing-remitting disease, and active secondary progressive disease[1][2][3]. Interferon beta-1a works by binding to type I interferon receptors (IFNAR1/2) on cell surfaces, activating Janus kinase (Jak) tyrosine kinases (Jak1/Tyk2), which leads to downstream activation of immunomodulatory proteins. This results in decreased activity of immune cells that attack myelin sheaths in MS patients, reduced inflammation in the central nervous system, enhanced regulatory T cell function, modulation of natural killer cells, upregulation of MHC I proteins for antigen presentation, and suppression of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin 17A[5][6]. The combination may be considered when both vitamin D supplementation and MS immunomodulation are desired.
