Overview

Shanchol is a brand of inactivated (killed) whole-cell oral cholera vaccine indicated for active immunization against *Vibrio cholerae* serogroups O1 and O139. It is administered orally and does not require a buffer solution. The vaccine induces local immunity in the gastrointestinal tract by exposing the immune system to killed *V. cholerae* cells, leading to protection against infection. Two doses given at least two weeks apart provide protection for up to 3–5 years in individuals over one year of age; a single dose offers short-term protection. Shanchol is primarily used for mass vaccination campaigns in endemic areas or during outbreaks and humanitarian crises[1][2][4][5]. The primary developer and manufacturer is Sanofi Healthcare India Private Limited[1].
