Overview
CIGB-210 is a recombinant protein therapeutic developed by the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB) in Havana, Cuba. Originally investigated for the treatment of cystic fibrosis, it has been repurposed as a potential therapy for COVID-19. The drug is designed to inhibit the entry of the SARS-CoV-2 virus into host cells by acting as a soluble decoy or by interfering with the interaction between the viral spike protein and the host cell receptors. Clinical development in Cuba has progressed to Phase 2 trials to evaluate its safety and efficacy in patients with COVID-19.
