Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Cimicoxib + sertraline** is a **combination drug** comprised of *cimicoxib*, a highly selective COX-2 inhibitor, and *sertraline*, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). This combination has been studied as an adjunctive treatment for **major depressive disorder**, based on the hypothesis that adding an anti-inflammatory agent (COX-2 inhibitor) could enhance the efficacy of standard antidepressant therapies. Cimicoxib acts by selectively inhibiting cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), thereby reducing inflammatory prostaglandin production. Sertraline acts as an SSRI, increasing extracellular levels of serotonin in the synaptic cleft by blocking its reuptake in presynaptic neurons, which is associated with antidepressant and anxiolytic effects.
