Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Cinnamon + metformin is a non-standardized combination of the dietary supplement cinnamon (typically derived from Cinnamomum species) and the pharmaceutical drug metformin, an oral biguanide antidiabetic agent. This combination is sometimes used by patients with type 2 diabetes or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in an attempt to improve glycemic control and metabolic parameters. Cinnamon has been shown in some studies to have hypoglycemic effects, potentially improving insulin sensitivity and lowering blood glucose levels. Metformin acts primarily by decreasing hepatic glucose production, increasing peripheral glucose uptake, and improving insulin sensitivity through enhanced GLUT-4 expression and insulin receptor activity. The concurrent use of both agents may lead to additive or synergistic effects on blood sugar reduction but also carries a risk of undesirable interactions affecting glucose metabolism; high doses of cinnamon combined with metformin can increase the risk of hypoglycemia or other metabolic disturbances[1][2]. There are no approved fixed-dose pharmaceutical products combining these two ingredients; their co-administration is typically patient-driven or studied in research settings.
