Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ciprofloxacin DPI (BAYQ3939) is an investigational dry powder inhalation formulation of the fluoroquinolone antibiotic ciprofloxacin, developed by Bayer in collaboration with Novartis. It utilizes PulmoSphere technology to deliver the drug directly to the lungs, aiming to reduce bacterial burden—specifically Pseudomonas aeruginosa—and the frequency of pulmonary exacerbations in patients with non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis (NCFB). The formulation was evaluated in the Phase III RESPIRE clinical trial program. Although it demonstrated a significant increase in time to first exacerbation in one study (RESPIRE 1), these results were not consistently replicated in a second study (RESPIRE 2), leading to the discontinuation of its development for this indication.
