cIPV + bOPV (Candy) is a sequential immunization regimen for the prevention of poliomyelitis, developed by the Institute of Medical Biology, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (IMBCAMS). The regimen combines a conventional inactivated poliovirus vaccine (cIPV), which contains inactivated Salk strains of poliovirus types 1, 2, and 3, with a bivalent oral poliovirus vaccine (bOPV) containing live-attenuated Sabin strains of types 1 and 3. The bOPV component is uniquely formulated as a dragee, often referred to as a candy formulation. This approach is part of the global strategy to eradicate polio by providing mucosal immunity through OPV while ensuring protection against type 2 poliovirus and reducing the risk of vaccine-associated paralytic polio (VAPP) through the inclusion of IPV. The regimen is typically evaluated in infants to determine the optimal sequence and number of doses for robust systemic and mucosal protection.
