Overview

cisplatin + capecitabine is a combination chemotherapy regimen, frequently referred to as the XP regimen, which has been investigated by the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences for the treatment of metastatic triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). The regimen consists of cisplatin, a platinum-based small molecule that induces DNA damage by forming inter- and intra-strand crosslinks, and capecitabine, an oral prodrug of 5-fluorouracil. Once metabolized, 5-fluorouracil inhibits thymidylate synthase, an enzyme essential for DNA synthesis. This combination therapy is typically employed in patients who have previously received anthracycline and taxane-based treatments. In a Phase II clinical trial conducted by the Cancer Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, the regimen demonstrated efficacy in improving objective response rates and progression-free survival in the metastatic TNBC setting.
