This is a combination chemotherapy regimen consisting of three cytotoxic agents—cisplatin, docetaxel, and epirubicin. Each drug has a distinct mechanism of action: - Cisplatin is a platinum-based compound that forms DNA crosslinks, leading to apoptosis in rapidly dividing cells. - Docetaxel is a taxane that stabilizes microtubules and inhibits their depolymerization, thereby blocking cell division. - Epirubicin is an anthracycline antibiotic that intercalates into DNA and inhibits topoisomerase II, preventing DNA replication and transcription. The combination exploits the additive or synergistic effects of these drugs for enhanced antitumor activity. It has been primarily studied as first-line therapy for metastatic or unresectable gastric cancer. Clinical trials have shown this regimen to be active with manageable toxicity profiles[1][2]. The EDP regimen may also be referred to as "epirubicin, cisplatin and docetaxel" in clinical literature.
